#008 Exercise

This is one of those painfully lame jokes (yes, “jayus” is apparently an actual word in the official Indonesian dictionary!) that tends to show up not only among IT folks, but also in gamer circles. These two species—IT nerds and gamers—often share the same issue: above-average body weight. In other words, obesity.

The culprit? Their screen-focused lifestyle. They can sit still for hours, eyes glued to the screen, completely absorbed. To keep their energy levels up, snacks are usually within arm’s reach. But then there’s the anomaly. Instead of snacks, some bring cigarettes and energy drinks to their desk. And voilà—these two items become their best buddies during all-nighters.

If we were to break this down, it’d look something like this:
  • Cigarettes (unhealthy)
  • Too many energy drinks (still unhealthy)
  • Staying up all night (very unhealthy)

The logical consequence? A skinny body. Yep, underweight instead of overweight.

The usual suspects who might suffer from this mysterious skinny disease include:

  • Freelancers working with overseas clients and upside-down time zones
  • Remote-working freelance network engineers
  • Gamers syncing their playtime with other countries’ servers, etc
